The Conversation: Social Media & Women’s Sports
11/02/2009
One of our goals with choosing the topic for our 2009 Fall Distinguished Lecture was to start the conversation about the impact of social media on women’s sports. Last week we posted a guest blog from Dr. Heather Maxwell (@DigitalMaxwell) titled Burden, Buzz or Both?: Reflections on Social Media & Women’s Sports (with more guest blogs to come!), but others have weighed in about this issue as well, which we’d like to acknowledge here.
- Megan Hueter (@mhueter), Co-Founder of the Women Talk Sports Network, wrote A conversation: Tucker Center, Twitter and women’s sports and continues to write timely and informative weekly blogs about social media and women’s sport.
- Fat Louie from the Women’s Sports Blog wrote, Is Twitter a Woman Thing?
- From the John Curly Center of Sports Journalism, there are a number of relevant posts from Dr. Marie Hardin (@mariehardinpsu) and her graduate students on the Sports, Media & Society blog. Dr. Hardin also wrote a guest column for the Tucker Center newsletter titled Does ‘New Media’ Bring New Attitudes Toward Women’s Sports?
- Q McCall (@qmccall3) of http://www.swishappeal.com wrote, Is there a “feminist responsibility” to support women’s sports? for Feministing.com
- Tucker Center Associate Director, Dr. Nicole LaVoi (aka One Sport Voice, @DrSportPysch) has written three related blogs, Things That Make You Go Hmmmm…More on Social Media & Women’s Sports, Top 5 Take Aways: Social Media & Women’s Sports, and The “success” of Twitter in promoting women’s sports: ‘Show me the money!’
We hope this just the beginning of the conversation. What do you think?
If you have written a personal blog that we can link to on this topic, or would like to be a contributing guest on the Tucker Center blog, contact Nicole LaVoi (nmlavoi@umn.edu).
