springNow that we’ve wrapped up our Fall Distinguished Lecture, we are beginning to plan the Spring 2010 event. We’re wondering what topic you would like to see us showcase for the spring lecture? Please respond to this blog and let us know what cutting edge issue you’d like to see the best and brightest tackle. We value your input so tell us what you’re thinking about pertaining to the sport and physical activity of girls and women.

Hei. I am Masters student of Sport and Exercise Psychology.

I like your engagement and would like to add some ideas. What about the high incidents of eating disorders especially anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in athletic world as a consequence of opposing role models, competitive pressure, incapable trainers, and lack of support in the development of independent thinking. I have seen it very often with young artists, long distance runners, swimmers….I would like to draw attention to ambitious parents that overload their children with expectations and responsibilities, to irresponsible coaches, who care more for the success than the athlete, etc.
Another idea would be: successful re-entering the sportsworld after child birth- positive examples would be beneficial.
I hope these ideas aren’t to trivial!

    Greetings,

    Claudia

    Hi Mary Jo and all,

Like it or not, we’re all getting older. And lots of us Boomers already qualify as middle-aged or beyond. I’d love to hear some experts on aging and women’s sports discuss the latest research on physical activity for women athletic women over the age of 50. Not chair exercises for the frail elderly, but what older female athletes need to know and do when dealing with aging bodies and a persistent desire and intent to row, swim, hike mountains, play rugby, etc.

      Mariah,
Hope all is well with you and thanks for this idea. Great minds must think alike as this is near the top of list for possible topics. If you know of any experts in this area and/or dynamic speakers, let us know. -nml
